Ed Dougherty brings up a name famously unpopular with music writers: Rush. “Every album of theirs has at least gone gold here in the States, the same lineup for (going on) 34 years. You mean, You know Rush and their fans are rock’s equivalent of the ‘Land of Misfit Toys’ but still …”

James Gemmell believes that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee should consider having more baseline criteria than just “25 years since the act’s first recording.”

“For example, the artist must have sold more than 50 million records to be given consideration,” Gemmell writes. “The rock band Deep Purple has sold more records than just about any artist or group not yet elected into the Hall of Fame. The band has sold more than 130 million records worldwide since 1968, and still tours and puts out albums to this very day. Purple had a Top 5 hit in 1968 with ‘Hush,’ and, of course, recorded the most famous song in rock history, ‘Smoke on the Water,’ in 1972. (”In history?” — Ed.) The Guiness Book of World Records once listed it as second only to “Happy Birthday” as the most well-known song in the world. What hurt Purple was that the band broke up in the mid-1970’s, at the height of its fame, and did not re-group until 1984. Still, the reunion tour in 1985 was the second-highest grossing U.S. tour.”

    Madonna burns up

Part of an ongoing series of tributes to Michigan’s own Madonna, who enters the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame March 10.

In her second music video, Madonna rolls around on the street, apparently practicing the moves she’d later put to use on-stage at MTV’s Video Music Awards in 1984.

By today’s standards, the video is awful. There’s a bunch of strange cutaways and non-sequiturs that attempt to add mystery to a clip that warrants none.

    The Mars Volta is:
    [Cedric Bixler Zavala] - Vocals
    [Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez] - Guitar
    [Jon Philip Theodore] - Drums
    [Juan Alderete] - Bass
    [Isaiah Ikey Owens] - Keyboards

It started in the summer of 2001. [Cedric Bixler’s] and [Omar Rodriguez’s] (both from At the Drive-In) fame had been playing in their dub band De Facto with [Ikey Owens] and [Jeremy Ward]. them had been playing for years, but after ATDI split up, De Facto teamed up with drummer [Jon Theodore] (Golden) and bassist [Eva Gardner] to start The Mars Volta.

They went on tour with The Anniversary in the fall of 2001. them got very mixed responses to the material. Some people expected another ATDI, some just wanted to see what the buzz was about, and a whole lot of people wondered who the freaks with the afros were and why The Anniversary weren’t playing yet. With a less than apparent “sound”, more often improvised than not and without clear cut beginnings and ends of songs, The Mars Volta was a disappointment to some, but won the hearts of many more.

    Original lineup - April 2002
After the band toured Europe in spring of 2002, them teamed up with producer Alex Newport (who had produced ATDI’s Vaya) and recorded what was to become the Tremulant EP. By early 2002, the buzz was going around that The Mars Volta was like a bomb ready to explode. After the successful European tour and a quick trip to Japan, Tremulant was released on Omar’s label GSL, and most skeptics were quickly silenced. With the three song, 19 minute EP, The Mars Volta made a clear statement of what them were all about, and what was to come.

This Aint No Picnic - Oct 2002
Not much was heard from The Mars Volta for a while, but the fans were adding up. The band played at Goldenvoice’s Coachella Valley Festival in May, which was to be the last show with the band for [Eva] and [Ikey]. There was never an official statement as to why the lineup changes were made. Before the summer was over, [Linda Good] had joined on keyboards and [Ralph Jasso], formerly of Universal Recovered, joined on bass.

The rest of the summer was spent writing new tracks, De Facto was seen jamming with The Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Fruiscante, Omar finished up a film project, and a short tour was scheduled for the fall of 2002, including Goldenvoice’s This Ain’t no Picnic Festival in Irvine.

Though the album has topped at #2 in both the US and UK, The Shins’ charm remains quite durable due to their reluctance to let go of their earlier approach. Though Wincing the Night Away is their most polished album to date, The Shins still sound like, well, The Shins. Though a similar style of production is repeated throughout the album, the glorious synth-aided melodies are guaranteed to have the majority of the album’s tracks on repeat for quite awhile. From the gritty moogs in “Waters of Nazareth” to the chirpy throwback style of “Valentine” (excellent shades of Yellow Magic Orchestra), the diversity within the repeated style is reason for listen alone. Additionally, one of the greatest aspects of the release is the output of great remixes from the album; it is proof of other artists’ admiration for this infectious output. Whether you are blasting † alone in your dorm room on a Monday afternoon or if one of the album’s stellar tracks is pulsating through the dance floor on a Friday night, Justice’s † has certainly lived up to the hype. It is one of the most infectious dance albums of the year.

    33. - Myth Takes

mythtakesThough their unconventional name (pronounced “Chk Chk Chk”) may give off the impression of a disregard for , the musical output of says otherwise. In their third release, Myth Takes, the group puts forth an exceptional effort through excitable, genre-bending songs that are virtually tireless in nature. Previously known for their pushy rock epics that simultaneously tackled topics like drugs, demons, and politics, Myth Takes marks a step forward in their stylisticbitiousness.
